This work takes inspiration form Rachel’s socially engaged practice working with people seeking sanctuary from conflict or famine. These pieces explore our own history and heritage surrounding these same issues on the island of Ireland.
Each panel is created using pigmented velcro set in a deep wooden frame.
The pieces are inspired by the scars that have been left in the landscape by unharvested potatoes planted by the occupants who have long since left to escape famine or conflict and travel across seas to better futures. These ‘Lazy Beds’, as they are sometimes known, can be found locally across fields in the Dromara Hills close to the artists home and studio.
